At DIA

As many of you know, I am a seasonal graduation photographer. Last weekend began the spring 2012 season for me - I flew down to Durango, CO and photographed Fort Lewis College's ceremony. I always love visiting that school because of the views. Those two were the first of many - and to those of my coworkers, I'll see you on the circuit.

This is just a shot from the airport - I always find the parking lot and the parking structure eerie. The airport is so busy, but these places feel so quiet and abandoned most of the time.

This little guy had a world class apple and he wasn't going to stop for a second to be afraid of us and the camera. He didn't miss a beat, and we were probably about four feet away. That was a pretty good find for that early in the morning!

I only wish I carried a camera back in the days when I worked at the campus dining hall at UNC - I saw squirrels eating whole sandwiches, absconding with Taco Bell still wrapped in the paper, and devouring entire pieces of pizza while defending the dumpster from employees.

Juggling Fire in Boulder, CO

On our way back to the Tumbleweed Houses workshop from our lunch break, we stopped for a moment with a few of the other attendees to watch this guy juggle fire. We didn't get to stay very long, but I do have a video as well. Maybe I'll post it. It was impressive, but of course not quite as impressive as the performer in Edinburgh who "ate fire" while a fairly large guy stood on a board of nails pressing into his abdomen. There's really no way to say that without cringing. I have some good shots from that show, and we actually gave him a quid for it.

It's not the most exciting photo in the world, but this is where we were last weekend. We attended the Tumbleweed Houses workshop in Boulder (it was expensive, but we did learn a few things). We did get to meet Jay Shafer - well, talk with him briefly, anyway. There were a lot of people there, and I didn't feel like getting pushy for a photo with/of him, so you'll just have to take our word for it. Apparently, I look like someone he knew from another workshop - I guess I just have one of those faces.

Just outside of Pengenffordd, we got an honest taste of old Wales.

A tiny sprout shows itself.

I love plants. They're fascinating. That light and boring nutrients can grow into something that, despite a total lack of consciousness, has a definite will to live (why else would plants try to fix themselves and heal?) is endlessly interesting.

Sadly, I have a lot of trouble keeping plants alive.

42 - The Meaning of Life. Also, a delicious pastry.

The meaning of life greets us with our pastry.

The last time we visited Glasgow, we only had 24 hours to quickly stop by at all of our old haunts from when we studied at Strathclyde University. One of them in particular was very important to us - Beanscene. It's just a coffee shop, and there are several others just like it in San Francisco, but this one was ours.

After an infant photo shoot, we stopped by this bagel shop in Colorado Springs for a quick breakfast.

I don't know about you, but I love cafés and small places like this, especially the local ones. It's not that I harbor any hatred for Starbucks and the like, I just love a unique place. This particular place was part of a chain, but it was the first time we'd set foot in one. I always try to get a photograph when I visit a new place; this one just happened to be easier to make, since I had all of my equipment with me from a shoot with a couple and their new baby.

The field at Trinity College, on our way to our accommodation.

We had the great fortune, on our last trip to the UK, to be able to travel to Ireland. We both have ancestry there (though if you ask an Irishman, all of the annoying Yanks claim heritage on the beautiful little island), and it was great fun to see the capitol of southern Ireland (in 2008, we visited Northern Ireland with friends).

Cows eye us suspiciously in a field somewhere near Kington, England.

When we last visited the UK in June '11, we were there for a friend's wedding (yes, as the photographers). After a brief jaunt to Hereford, the nearest "large" town, we were picked up by the groom's friend Dan. We took what seemed to be an endless, single lane road back to Kington through many fields in his diesel Mini. It was a fun ride, but I daresay we did fear slamming into an oncoming car. Strangely, that doesn't seem to happen over there.
